Why don't the market porters talk to anyone any more? Why won't Ben talk about his treatment at the hands of GSM?
They've all been gagged. Every one of them has been ordered by their superiors (I use the term loosely) not to talk to traders about anything more controversial than the weather. If you try to have a chat with any of GSM's staff and Barmy heaves into view they clam up tighter than a barnacle's sphincter.
What are GSM so afraid of?

No one's seen Ben recently so we can't ask him whats going on, anyway he's such a decent bloke he wouldn't say anything anyway
Have they been told to shut up because Ben's case is going to an internal disciplinary hearing or to an employment tribunal?
In my years of working in offices the exact same thing happened when members of staff went missing.
Ben's crime was simple enough. He was considered a soft touch by his bosses because he didn't treat traders like scum. USM are trying to make Ben's life as miserable as possible in the hope that he'll quit - they have no case for dismissing him.
So has Ben been fired or is he at the Elephant?
So far he's at the Elephant. Weekdays only I believe. Allegedly covering for Jonno while he's away. Jonno's due back soon, so we'll see.
For the moment, the best way to keep up with Ben's situation is to go to the Whistler's site and look up the "Ben" post.
Ben's other crime is / was his popularity. Also he was respectful and obviously this goes against the GSM treat them like s**t philosophy.
Just goes to show what a shabby bunch of idiots this management is. Ben was one of the most decent human beings I have ever met. He did his job well and was loyal to these scumbags. He never crossed the line and kept things running so smoothly that I can honestly say after all these years of being at Greenwich market, there has never been a better individual running this market.
A note to Eric Reynolds:- If you have the courage to read this - If your interests had anything to do with this market then Barny would have no place here and Ben would be the best manager Greenwich has ever had. He was Loyal to you and have brushed him aside like he was dogshit. This is not good and you need to step in before you have more problems at this market than your pathetic Barny can handle. If you do not, then we can only consider your intention is to destroy this market willfully knowing there will be bollocks all for us traders after June 2009.
Moral is at an alltime low - 20 f'ing years low. Get your skates on please and deal with this.
I'm not surprised Ben's staying quiet, apart from anything else, I doubt he wants to risk jeopardising his current or future position with USM.

I am worried. You are asking us to say stuff and I understand why. But we are frightened. How do we know we can trust you. How do we know this isn't a trap. How do we know we won't get thrown off the market. We are scared- do you understand. We have seen what happens when someone speaks out- trader or staff, it makes no difference. You want our confidence- how can you reassure us.
I do understand. People trust Whistler, but I have no track record. I'm well aware of the consequences of raising your voice in this market. You're right to be cautious. Give me time and I'll earn your trust. I think my posts will speak for me, so keep reading and speak up when you feel ready.
