Hello, I was wondering if I could speak to you about some of the issues surrounding Greenwich Market. Would you be able to give me call this week? Alternatively, is there a number I could get you on?
Thanks,

It would be impolite not to respond, wouldn't it?

lol, don't forget the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help u Barmy
weh hey! I am rubbing my hands together in anticipation, hopefully the shit will hit the fan now and we shall see some justice at last!
This is great news. Now everyone will know what the truth is. Perhaps now the powers that be will sit up, listen and act.
Marketeer - keep us informed of how you get on please.
Marketeer
Are you really a friend of the market ?
Is it wise to do our dirty laundry in public? The Press ?
Will this really benefit the market & draw more people in ?
I don't think so.
Sure go after GSM & hit hard against mismanagement & injustice,
but be wary of the gossip & trader on trader agendas.
The future looks bleak enough , what with recession on it's way & redevelopment/relocation just 'round the corner , problems with the DLR etc.etc..
Be a friend of the market & remember the title of your blog
"I Love Greenwich Market Traders"
Where's the LOVE ??
Squawk
who do you think is going to be housed in the relocation? only friends of barny? start licking pidgeon.
To pippi longstocking - on your other comment you say you are sitting up at 2am in the morning dreading your workday at the market. You are not alone. I have heard so many stallholders say that they dread going into the market these days.
The way ahead is to completely change the way the market is run. To basically start again. To make sure there are some rules that the management have to abide to as well so they can be pulled up if they are being unfair.
Respect needs to be re-established. Trust needs to be built. If we don't basically start again, I don't know how the market can recover.
Time for a clean slate. No more GSM would be the best place to start from. Then we may have a chance.
Here's another newsworthy item:
I wonder if GSM knows about Barney and Pat's profitable sideline in allocating stalls at this weekend's Thames festival?
This year they are doing it outside of GSM, but God knows how much time they have spent during market hours on organising what is after all a rival attraction. It's going to take a wad of cash away from Greenwich, yet our wonderful GSM managers are happy to promote it!
On the Thames Festival website under the the heading of
'Festival team' it names Barny Cockford as Festival Market contact www.thamesfestival.org on the 2nd page of get brochure found at bottom of left hand side on about tab (sorry not very good on computer speak). Can anyone shed some light on the connection between GSM and Thames Festival organisation? It also amazes me that not every trader on the market was given the opportunity to take part in this event via Greenwich Market. What was the reasoning behind the selection process? However I have noticed how quickly some of the 'choosen ones' jumped ship so fast and refrained from slagging Barny of just long enough to stick their noses right up his arse!!
way heey, who's throwing their toys out of the bath water then. Doin Thames fest was a commercial decision dick/h, nothing to do with arse licking
ooooooooooooooo...a little on the defensive side I think...touched a nerve arse licker?
Me, I'm throwing the toys out! I asked to go twice but was told to wait and see. Eventually I missed out.
What worries me is the lack of transparency. It's typical of this lot that you never know where you stand or what is going on. From my bathtub it seems to be another example of them dispensing favours and privileges to their buddies.
Na d/h as u are now formaly known as. I'm anti barmie as much as the next trader. But because I make a commercial decision to do Thames fest does not make me arse licker. I cannot spk for other traders who were not asked to do the festival they need to confront barmie and patricia to resolve there arguement
Does anyone else out their agree that it's just not possible to confront these two? You either get a straight lie like "you never asked" or their walkie talkie goes off in the middle of the conversation and hey presto! they've gotta go somewhere else more important.
I agree that it has shown certain people up for who they are. Some of the forementioned chosen ones do spend half of their time complaining about how unfair the system is and what a t***er Barny is but seem to have adopted a NBF when he has dangled a carrot in front of them. I don't think that the general consenses is that everyone is two faced but just some have shown their true colours.
Why are we straying from the point and fighting tader v. trader?
The real point here is the crummy way we have been treated by GSM management. They are laughing at us when we throw these d-head/arse licker comments at each other, when all the time they have brought this situation about by lack of communication and fairness.Plus if GSM are not conected to the Festival what the hell were Pat and Barney doing trying to place Greenwich Market traders there? Several stalls took the day off from Greenwich to go to the Thames Festival.
We run our business to make money. If you are offered a way of making money you take it otherwise your not a very good business man woman. Yes there are serious flaws in the way this market is run but don't get ridiculous. Concentrate on the real issues not tit for tat I cant believe i'm reading this when there are such bigger issues at stake .Remember this market is about to move !
Wow, unbelievable & you wonder why the atmosphere in the market is as it is. Listen to yourselves.
Anyone can apply for the Thames festival, log onto the website, simple, the traders either side of me had no idea who Barney was, they just applied...
To the person who asked twice, why didn't you make other enquiries.
As for the two faced comment, this whole blog is two faced in nature, people expressing views they haven't got the balls to do so face to face .
Marketeer you seem to have gone very quiet, how was the Thames Festival for you?
Bravo!
Is GSM involved in the organisation of the Thames Festival? Does anyone know? If they are not has Barny taken on another job to pay the bills due to pressures of the Credit Crunch?
I think the bigger issue here is more about how empty Greenwich was this weekend and how many stalls went to the Thames Festival. I don't blame any of the stallholders for taking up this opportunity - we all need the bloody money! At the end of the day though, whatever we think about Greenwich Hospital, they are a charity and this weekend, they lost out in a big way. I thought last year the policy was to do the TF, you had to also do Greenwich. This year it all changed. Now can we please stop slagging each other off. It's really childish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The policy changed this year because GSM could not control the stallholders. Barney and Pat did the Festival as private enterprise. Conflict of interest?
Unfortunately, it just was not cost effective to open both. we are in a serious credit crunch/recession, just simple mathematics. Permanent traders will still pay half rent.
Marketeer that is twice you have been asked a question and not responded, you started this, now stand up and be counted.
Why should he?
He's just provided this forum, he doesn't have to respond. You don't ask the boxing promoter for his opinions as the contestants slug it out in the ring.
He's not responsible for the tyrannical, disorganised GSM regime that has set us against each other.
Sometimes the only way to get a good debate going is to be a bit childish and rattle peoples cages, we are very apathetic by nature and sometimes defences and emotions need to be agitated to acheive a response. Since the Barny's arse comment there have been 15 comments...good that has got the attention this blog needs for everyone to stay focused and save our market and that's what unites us.
Are you sure that Barny and Pat did the Thames Festival as private enterprise? If that's true and I was part of Greenwich Hospital, I'd be so p**sed off and I would seriously be questioning GSM as to what the hell is happening!
GSM were not involved in this year's Thames Festival.
So hang on a minute. What is being suggested here is that the Manager and Assistant Manager of Greenwich Market ran another market last weekend whereby they took a huge amount of business away from GSM and Greenwich Hospital. In my row alone last weekend at Greenwich, nearly half the stalls were empty and were covered by traders taking an extra stall for free. That's a very large proportion of empty stalls and a huge amount of lost revenue. I can't believe GSM would allow this to happen - and if what's being suggested is true, all I can say to Greenwich Hospital is WAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP!
So whats happened with press? Have you gone on holidays?
Talking of missing persons has anyone seen Barny recently?
Yes, I saw him in the food court Sunday. He stopped to talk to his select band of chums, favourites and lackeys. Everyone else got ignored as usual.
I saw him on Sunday too, but other than that he's hardly ever around. Someone said that he's gone part time. Has anyone else heard that?
We may have witnessed "People Power" in action. Comments here and on the Whistler's blog have been incredibly vitriolic against GSM and Barney in particular.
I guarantee you that top brass from GSM and the Hospital read these angry postings and that it's no coincidence that changes have been made. Who could fail to grasp the depth of the bitterness, even if you discounted some of it as malicious?
As a result it seems that Barney has been shifted sideways or at least moved out of the firing line, even if it turns out to be temporary.
To those of you here that have accused other contributors of being two faced and not big enough to stand up for themselves - up to a point you were right because it's cowardly and weak not to make a complaint face to face. But bear this in mind - some of us tried and all of us suffered the consequences for years afterwards.
By collectively highlighting the injustices we have had to endure, we have achieved something that we never thought possible - People Power.
| heard he has gone part time aswell though i heard it was from christmas how much overtime does that come too i wonder? pretty sure that this is so that he can work elsewhere but still control what happens at the market.
There have been so many opportunities for change on the market and so many chances for GSM to take responsibility.
The complaints about the management have spanned for a few years now. It all started with the survey that was done absolutely ages ago which was extremely critical of the management and it's approach towards the traders. Then there were all the letters of complaint. Now the blogs.
I really do hope that we are witnessing people power. However I'm still not convinced that things have changed enough.
I think it would be better if management and traders sat down together and came up with ways to run the market. That must be the most balanced way of approaching things.
If something like this were to happen, only then would I feel that real change is occuring.
Good riddance to bad rubbish barmy.
Bring back Ben
Aww...we love Ben! xx
