Oliver: The Peacemaker

For quite a while, the proper complaints procedure has been to raise issues you may have with a fellow trader with the office first. If necessary, the manager can have a quiet, conciliatory, private word with the offending trader. A sensible, adult approach to defusing disputes before they start.

Which only works if the manager in question is also an adult...

A trader selling clothes was using stepped hanger bars which protruded from the top bar of the stall into the aisle. Another trader thought this narrowed the aisle affecting their trade and may have been a hazard to the public. They went to the office and told Barmy their concerns.

Minutes later Barmy's enforcer, the Dodger, arrived at the stall and told the trader to remove the bars immediately because Barmy "said so".

Jaws dropped.

On a slightly unrelated note, a couple of weeks ago BBC London run a news number about the traders at Covent Garden's Apple Market - traders being treated unfairly, being edged out etc.

Perhaps contact should be made with the BBC London team and point them in the direction of these blogs? A bit more interesting...

Thanks for the tip. I'm sure Marketeer's messenger will make it so.

frankly i'm bored of pidgeon shit and dodger. i think the topic is exhausted. we all know barny did wrong in regard to dodger and that it was all so very wrong, but he like the pidgeons will recover. what about the real lives he is ruining? the traders he has trampled all over, the storage boys he has shat on and what of the lovely ben? gone but never forgotten. it comes to something when someone can be shoved out for respecting the people he works along side. i myself have been'kept in check' by ben but never came away feeling as though i was a waste of air space, which is what barny is so brilliant at, oh shit i have unearthed his 1 talent. i sit here at this late hour dreading my working day tomorrow. forever waiting the revolution.

Well don't go then love, vote with your feet and find another way of selling your product, you should not allow any job to make you feel so unhappy, you have choices use them...a word from the wise.

It's not the job that makes him / her unhappy. It's the environment the management have created. Why should he / she go? Where's the justice in that?

You are obviously very naive to think that good always conquers bad in this world, just because the way the market has been run is wrong doesn't mean that justice will prevail and all will be rosey, you have to get real and join the self preservation society or how about starting a revolution instead of forever waiting for it.

There are those of us in the world who are cynics. There are those of us who are optimists. I believe good will conquer bad - I may be niaive but I would rather believe that.

Do you think that with everything that has happened, GSM's contract will be renewed in 2012. I would be totally amazed if it is.

So, my cynical friend above, maybe the revolution has already begun.

Do you honestly think that in 2012 the Market will still be there running as usual but with a little spruce up? by the time the developers have got their hands on the place you won't be able to recognise it regardless of who gets the contract! There wont be little metal frames with table tops on and people selling little candles and hand made objects and paying £40 or £53. There are going to be smart modern units full of franchises paying astronomical rent. I respect your optimism and because of that I would beg you to look after yourself and not get carried away with a crusade.

...and the franchises will be called Costa, Vodafone,EAT and Yo! Sushi.
